Miscellaneous

That wonderful training unit, 'HAZARD' otherwise
known as the 'DRIU'.
The modern version of the water torture.

(Damage Repair Instructional Unit)

From the outside, it is just a grey metal structure
on hydraulic legs.

Here we have a group waiting to go into the unit.
In this group is AB Larry Dwyer, AB 'Squeak' and
CPO Cook David Stubbs.

One of the many holes that have to be plugged
to stop the many gallons of cold water entering
the ship section.
All while the unit rocks just like a real ship,
hence the hydraulic legs.

A little drop of water in the lower section, just to
start you off.
The water will come most of the way up to this
hatch top if you don't manage to stop it.

One of the reasons why the water will get so
high, another blast hole in the side of the section.

A through alleyway in the ship section, all of this will
become flooded during the exercise.

Another angle of the messdeck, showing the
hatch cover by the door.
This hatch has water pouring through it at a great
rate, it is also warped so that it cannot be closed
easily. Meanwhile water levels are rising to head
level and the vessel is rolling. Tricky!!

A nice summery scene beside the lake.
This is where the sea survival course takes place
jumping into the lake from the tower on the left
hand slipway. Then comes the job of getting
into the life rafts, being spun a few times and
swimming back to the slipway.
All while wearing a cumbersome 'once-only' suit

This shows the tower from which we jumped.
As you see, this also takes place in all weathers.

To start it off, the safety divers go in first.
Brave souls, even with the suits on, it was still cold.
